Made for the days you'd rather not carry a cool box

A cooler backpack frees your hands and spreads the weight, so cold food and drink come along without the fight of a rigid cooler.

Picnics & the beach

Carry the spread, the blanket and the cold drinks to the spot in one go — over sand, across a park, up a hill — without a hand full of cool box.

Camping & festivals

Keep drinks cold at the tent and the food fresh at the pitch. A 30L bag holds enough for a group and still packs down between uses.

Commuting & work lunches

A smaller 18–20L cooler keeps a lunch and a few cans cold at the desk or on site, and wears like the daypack you'd carry anyway.

Fishing, matches & day trips

Long days out are exactly what these are for: hands free for the gear, and a cold drink still cold hours after you set off.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Cooler Backpack

6 min read Frostline

A cooler backpack does one useful thing that a rigid cool box can't: it keeps your hands free. Wear the cold food and drink on your back and you can carry the blanket, hold a child's hand, or manage a scramble down to the beach without setting anything down. But the bags vary a lot. Here's what actually matters when you choose one.

Capacity: match it to the trip, not the biggest number

Cooler backpacks are usually rated in litres and in "cans". As a rough guide: an 18–20L bag suits a lunch and a few drinks for one or two people; 28–30L covers a couple or a small family day out; and a 30L bag that holds 36–48 cans is the one for a group picnic or a camping trip. Bigger isn't always better — a half-empty cooler warms faster than a full one, and a big bag is heavier to carry. Every product page lists exactly how much the bag holds so you can match it to how you'll actually use it.

Insulation and how long it holds the cold

The headline number is how long a bag keeps things cold. In our range that runs from around 8 hours to 16 hours with ice packs. Thicker foam and a sealed lining hold longer, but technique matters just as much: pre-chill everything overnight, pack the bag cold, keep it full, and keep it out of the sun. Insulation slows temperature change — it can't create cold — so a cooler loaded warm never really catches up.

Leakproofing and easy cleaning

A good cooler backpack has a sealed, wipe-clean lining so melted ice and small spills stay inside instead of soaking through to your back or the car boot. Look for heat-welded or hot-pressed seams rather than stitched-only liners. A shell you can wipe down matters after a sandy beach or a muddy field, and airing the bag open after use is what keeps a cooler from smelling musty.

Comfort, pockets and extras

Because you wear it, the straps matter. Padded, adjustable shoulder straps and a breathable back panel make a full load genuinely easy to carry; a chest strap helps on longer walks. Beyond the main compartment, useful extras include side bottle pockets, a front pocket for cutlery and keys, a bottle opener on the strap, and — on the bigger bags — a picnic-mat holder or a second insulated zone so hot food and cold drinks stay apart. Decide which of these you'll actually use, and don't pay for the ones you won't.

Cooler Backpack FAQs

What is a cooler backpack and how does it work?

A cooler backpack is an insulated rucksack with a sealed, leakproof lining. Packed with cold food, drinks and a couple of ice packs, the insulation slows heat getting in, so your contents stay cold for hours while you carry them hands-free on your back.

How long will a cooler backpack keep drinks cold?

It depends on the bag and the conditions, but most in our range hold the chill for 8 to 16 hours with ice packs. Cooling lasts longest when you pack contents that are already cold, keep the bag full, and keep it out of direct sun.

Which size cooler backpack should I choose?

For a lunch and a few cans, an 18–20L bag is plenty. For a couple or small family day out, look at 28–30L. For a big group or a full picnic spread, choose a 30L bag that holds 36–48 cans. Each product page lists exactly how much it holds.

Are cooler backpacks actually leakproof?

The linings are sealed so melted ice and small spills stay inside rather than soaking through to your back. They are not built to hold loose water, but they easily handle ice packs, ice cubes and the odd container leak.

Can I keep food hot in a cooler backpack too?

Yes. Insulation works both ways, so it slows heat leaving as well as entering. Pack hot food hot and eat within a few hours; some bags in the range have separate zones so you can carry hot food and cold drinks at once.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are dispatched quickly and the delivery estimate for your address is shown at checkout before you pay. Delivery is free UK-wide on orders over £30, with a flat £3.99 charge under that.

Can I return a cooler backpack if it isn't right?

Yes. If it isn't right for you, return it in line with our returns policy for a refund. Keep the packaging where you can and contact us first so we can make the return painless.
